Wash Warm and lay flat to dry.
To get the best life out of your stretch wear (Gymnastics, Skating, Dance or Synchro) wash in warm water on a gentle cycle. Do not wring dry if you are hand washing. Instead lay flat on a towel and roll up and squeeze the water out.
Do NOT use fabric softener.
Spandex wear is supposed to wick the moisture away from the skin and fabric softeners leaves an oily residue on the garment which can act as a water repellant or blocks the wicking process. It also is very hard on the spandex and threads in the garment that makes it stretchy.
The sweat and odours that you wanted to remove from the garment by washing get trapped under the fabric softener and are masked by the perfume in the fabric softener.
Wash your garment in warm water on a gentle cycle. Hang or lay flat to dry. Use a mild detergent that does not include fabric softeners.

I am a parent and I want to save a penny if I can but too big has as many problems as too small. This blog post is a quick note on how to fit your gymnastic suit so that you can look your best and be comfortable in it.
Why do you wear a gymnastics suit? It is a suit that covers the body like a second skin. It is there so that you are covered but if you are being spotted by your coach you are caught NOT your suit. If the coach catches the clothing instead of the athlete it can be hazardous.
Let's look at 4 suits. Too small, just right and too big and way too big. The sizes shown are a size 7, 8, 9 and 10 on the same body.
LEOTARD TOO SMALL
LEOTARD FITS JUST RIGHT
ONE SIZE TOO BIG
This size is one size too big. Their are wrinkles in the gusset area and wrinkles in the back and the shoulder allows more than 3 fingers under the strap.
LEOTARD MUCH TOO BIG
How long will a gymnastics suit fit? The average child grows about 3% per year and our leotards will fit for about 1 year or more. Spandex also relaxes and it will get stretched out and seem more relaxed after use. To look your best you are far better off to buy a suit that fits. If your club uses the competitive suits for more than one year, trade up with your friends kids.
